Harry Caine war einst Filmregisseur. Seit seiner Erblindung kann er allerdings nur noch Drehbücher verfassen. Als ihn der Sohn seines einstigen Produzenten Martel bittet, ein Drehbuch über das Leben seines gerade verstorbenen und bis dato vom Sohn gehassten Vaters zu schreiben, erinnert sich Harry an seine eigene Vergangenheit. Damals verband ihn eine leidenschaftliche Beziehung mit der Schauspielerin Lena, die gleichzeitig mit Martel verheiratet war. Martel erwies sich als rasend vor Eifersucht ... - Melodramatische Liebesgeschichte mit für Almodovar typischen Wendungen, die bei aller Drastik der Emotionen einen hohen Grad an Versöhnlichkeit bietet. So verbindet der Film höchsten Anspruch mit bester Unterhaltung und ist ganz nebenbei die überzeugende Reflexion eines Filmemachers über das Filmemachen. Und als solcher erinnert er stark an Billy Wilders Alltime-Klassiker "Sunset Boulevard", der ebenfalls einen Drehbuchautor ins Zentrum seiner Handlung stellen.
