Wien 1921: Inflation und Hunger haben die Menschen erniedrigt, die moralischen Grundsätze der Bürger wanken. Die Tochter eines Beamten gerät ins Elend und in die Abhängigkeit von einer Schneiderin, die einen illegalen Amüsierbetrieb für die Reichen der Stadt betreibt, während sich um sie herum weitere Schicksale entscheiden, Menschen zugrunde gehen und sogar töten. Pabsts vorzüglich inszenierter Stummfilmklassiker verlässt die hermetische Welt des expressionistischen Kammerspiels und öffnet sich teils plakativ, aber stets höchst wirksam der sozialen Realität. Mit Asta Nielsen, Werner Krauss und der jungen Debütantin Greta Garbo hochkarätig besetzt. Nach 20-jähriger Rekonstruktionsarbeit des Filmmuseums München in Zusammenarbeit mit internationalen Archiven liegt der Film in einer restaurierten, viragierten und musikalisch bearbeiteten Fassung vor, die viele Kürzungen, die von Seiten der Zensur an dem Film vorgenommen wurden, aufhebt und sich dem Original bis auf etwa eine halbe Stunde Laufzeit wieder annähert. - Sehenswert ab 14.
