El Renacimiento de la humanidades clásicas en Europa traspasó pronto sus fronteras hasta alcanzar, en el siglo XVI, las lejanas tierras de ultramar recién conquistadas; las nuevas ideas gramaticales y culturales llegaron raudo a América, fundamentalmente a través de la obra de Antonio de Nebrija. A esta tradición pertenecía fray Andrés de Olmos, sacerdote que, tras arribar a la Nueva España en 1528, junto a fray Juan de Zumárraga, además de enseñar latín a los indígenas en el Imperial Colegio de la Santa Cruz, en Tlatelolco, aplicó sus conocimientos de la gramática latina en la redacción del primer tratado de la lengua náhuatl conservado: el Arte de la lengua mexicana. Este Arte es el primer testimonio de una descripción gramatical completa y sistemática de una lengua indígena amerindia, el náhuatl, y para su elaboración se tomaron numerosos elementos de la gramática latina, a pesar de que la estructura lingüística de ambas lenguas es completamente diferente. En este libro se presenta un estudio sobre la vida de fray Andrés de Olmos, así como sobre la génesis y redacción de esta gramática y, por primera vez, una edición crítica del Arte de la lengua mexicana
