"Be embraced" by Beethoven's nine symphonies in this concert series featuring Gustavo Dudamel and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela (SBSOV) at Barcelona's Palau de la Musica. Enjoy here the fifth and final concert, featuring Beethoven's Ninth! When approaching Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, it is difficult to know where to begin. Its musical scope and cultural weight are beyond description, beyond measure. Every symphony composed it its wake was compared to it, and the struggle to meet its challenge is engrained into the music of Schubert, Berlioz, Brahms, Wagner, Bruckner, Mahler, and countless other 19th century composers. Its extra-musical meaning, perhaps most evident in the final movement's choral-symphonic setting of Friedrich Schiller's famous "Ode to Joy" (1785), has been enlisted time and again in messages of hope and brotherhood: as the opening music of the Olympic Games, as the official anthem of the European Union, even as a protest anthem in Beijing's Tiananmen Square and during the fall of the Berlin Wall. A musical expression of the Enlightenment, Beethoven's last great symphony unites and inspires, provokes and questions, with ideas as relevant to us in the 21st century as to those sitting at its premiere almost two hundred years ago. For me, Beethoven's symphonies lead us on a journey to discover our deepest human emotions. - Gustavo Dudamel In a profound exploration of the entirety of a composer's symphonic oeuvre, Gustavo Dudamel and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela (SBSOV) perform all of Beethoven's nine symphonies in a five-day residency at Barcelona's beautiful Palau de la Música Orféo Catalá. Known for their incredibly dynamic and wide-ranging musical interpretations, the SBSOV and its Music Director Gustavo Dudamel perform regularly at prestigious concert venues and celebrated music festivals. Founded in 1975 by José Antonio Abreu, the SBSOV's 180 members have been named UNESCO Artists for Peace and have toured the world over: in Europe and the Americas, in Asia and the Middle East. For Beethoven's Symphony No. 9, the SBSOV are joined by the Orfeó Català and the Cor de Cambra del Palau de la Música Catalana
