La mer est son horizon, le ciel est son destin ! Et ce depuis le VIe siècle, lorsque, au terme d'une navigation légendaire, Malo, le saint fondateur, édifie dans l'ancienne cité d'Alet une église qui devient cathédrale au IXe siècle. En 1145, le siège épiscopal est transféré sur la presqu'île voisine de Saint-Malo, au coeur de la ville qui se développe. La nouvelle cathédrale s'agrandit au fil des siècles.0Les bâtisseurs composent avec les contraintes du site pour édifier, au XIIIe siècle, un splendide choeur gothique inspiré de l'art anglo-normand. Ils aménagent ensuite les collatéraux, les chapelles et l'emblématique clocher, maintes fois détruit et reconstruit, ce phare qui guide les marins dans la périlleuse baie de la Rance. Elle est la paroisse de Malouins célèbres : les marins et corsaires Surcouf, Duguay-Trouin et, bien sûr, Jacques Cartier, sans oublier Chateaubriand, qui y pria.0
