Haralampi G. Oroschakoff (*1955 in Sofia) gilt als ein Vorläufer des Ost-West-Dialogs in der Kunst und als Erneuerer der Ikonenrezeption in der westlichen Malerei. In den 1980er-Jahren fiel er mit Zeichnungen, Textcollagen, Installationen und Videoperformances auf. Seine Bildserien führen die monochrome Malerei eigenständig weiter und benennen die unsichtbare Kulturgrenze zwischen dem postlateinischen Westen und dem postbyzantinischen Osten. Das reich illustrierte Buch ist eine Zeitreise durch Leben und Werk des Abkömmlings einer alten exilierten russischen Familie mit Wohnsitzen in Berlin, Cannes und Wien. Oder, wie Elke Schmitter es treffend zusammenfasst: »Oroschakoffs Spurensicherung der mythisch fremden Welt des Ostens öffnet den Blick für die Vielgestalt dieses ›anderen Europas‹ in seiner ›slawischen Duldsamkeit, asiatischen Grausamkeit, und orientalischen Poesie‹ zu einer konkreten Kunst der Kartographie brüchiger Oberflächen sowie polemisch benutzbar gewordener Symbole von farbintensiver Kraft.« Mit einem Booklet, das ausgesuchte Texte und Rezensionen zu seinem Leben und Werk im Zeitraum von 1980 bis 2016 enthält.
