Der Band 6 der Reihe "Festungsforschung" versammelt Beiträge des internationalen Symposiums "Festungen in Gärten - Gärten in Festungen", 2011 gemeinsam veranstaltet von der Bayerischen Verwaltung der staatlichen Schlösser, Gärten und Seen, der Prinz-Albert-Gesellschaft e.V. und der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Festungsforschung e.V. - - Die Aufsätze dokumentieren anschaulich die vielfältigen Beziehungen zwischen Gartenkunst und Fortifikation vom 17. bis 20. Jh. So übten sich z.B. Prinzen mit Anlagen wie in Rosenau oder Osborne House im Festungsbau. Schloss Rosenborg in Kopenhagen und die fränkische Burg Zwernitz verdeutlichen noch heute, wie Befestigung und Garten auch als Gesamtkunstwerk eine semantische und architektonische Einheit bilden konnten. - - Auf englischen Landsitzen in Hampshire trat das Phänomen der Kombination von Festungsbauwerken und herrschaftlichem Garten erstmals auf. In der Barockzeit legte man, wie in Paris, begehbare Kleinarchitekturen in Form von Gartenfestungen an. Das Beispiel Moritzburg zeigt, wie wehrhaft anmutende Inseln den Hintergrund für Hoffeste und nachgestellte Seeschlachten bildeten. - - Derart inszeniert spielten Gartenfestungen über drei Jahrhunderte für die Alltagswelt einer vom Kriegertum durchdrungenen Adels- und Hofkultur eine wesentliche Rolle
