Dieses Buch stimmt inhaltlich überein mit meiner Dissertation, mit der ich im Juli 1995 an der Universität Stuttgart promovierte. Sie entstand während meiner Tätigkeit als Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Tragwerksentwurf und -konstruktion (jetzt Institut für Konstruktion und Entwurf II). Die Arbeit soll einen Beitrag leisten, potentielle Schwachstellen einer Brücke bereits im Vorfeld von Berechnung und Bemessung zu vermeiden. Norwendig hierfür ist, den Blick stärker auf das Entwerfen, der eigentlichen "Geburtsstunde" einer Brücke, zu richten. Damit kann die Lebensdauer sehr häufig "zum Nulltarif" erhöht werden. Vor dem Hintergrund ständig steigender Unterhaltungskosten ist dies auch volkswirtschaftlich von großer Bedeutung. Das Buch richtet sich daher an alle im Brückenbau tätigen Ingenieure, die mit Ausschreibung und Vergabe, aber auch mir der Auslobung von Wettbewerben sowie mit der technischen Bearbeitung im Büro betraut sind. Herrn Prof. Dr. -Ing. , Drs. h. c. J. Schlaich, Ordinarius am Institut für Konstruktion und Entwurf II, danke ich für die Initiative zu dieser Arbeit und die Übernahme des Hauptberichts.
