Kein anderes Metall hat die Menschheit von Beginn an so fasziniert wie das Gold: Sinnbild von Schönheit und Macht. Wo es gefunden wurde, zog es die Menschen in seinen Bann. Das Tauerngold entdeckte man schon vor ca. 2000 Jahren in Rauris, Gastein oder Heiligenblut. Der urkundlich nachweisbare alpine Edelmetallbergbau begann im 8. Jahrhundert: Mehr als 130 Kilometer Stollen und Schächte wurden seit dem Mittelalter in die Tauern getrieben. Um die Mitte des 16.Jahrhunderts erreichte die Goldgewinnung ihren wirtschaftlichen Höhepunkt,bis sie im 17. Jahrhundert beinahe zum Erliegen kam. Insgesamt wurden ca. 60 Tonnen Gold gewonnen.
