Regisseur Georg Wilhelm Pabst unterlief mit seiner revolutionären Schnitt-Technik jede gefällige Unterhaltungsästhetik und schuf mit "Die Liebe der Jeanne Ney" ein hochmodernes Filmdrama. Quellmaterial der aktuellen Restaurierung ist eine Kopie, die das New Yorker Museum of Modern Art in den 30er Jahren vom Reichsfilmarchiv angekauft hat. Diese Kopie dürfte der deutschen Originalfassung entsprechen und stammt vom sogenannten B-Negativ, das sich nicht erhalten hat. Bei der Restaurierung wurden die englischen Zwischentitel gegen die deutschen Texte laut Zensurkarte ausgetauscht. Zu dem Film existiert in der Musiksammlung des MoMA eine historische Klavierkompilation, die vermutlich in den 30er Jahren entstand, als die damalige Kuratorin Iris Barry im Berliner Reichsfilmarchiv die Kopie des Films erwarb. Die Klavierkompilation wurde zur restaurierten Fassung eingerichtet und von Bernd Thewes für das Funkhausorchester neu instrumentiert.
