М. М. Сомов привел в Антарктиду первую Советскую Антарктическую экспедицию, поднял красный флаг над Мирным, руководил первым внутриконинентальным походом в глубь ледяного материка Антарктиды.

The book of the famous Soviet polar explorer, Hero of the Soviet Union, Doctor of Geographical Sciences Mikhail Mikhailovich Somov (1908-1973) is a collection of his essays, documentary stories and articles.
A remarkable scientist-hydrologist, polar explorer, he was a bright, significant personality, a worthy son of our Soviet Motherland. He worked in ice reconnaissance, walked along with I.D.Papanin along the Northern Sea Route for the first time in one navigation to the east and back, bravely defended the Soviet Arctic from the Nazi aggressors, flew one of the first to the North Pole, directed the North Pole-2 drifting station". M. M. Somov led the first Soviet Antarctic expedition to Antarctica, raised the red flag over Mirny, led the first inland voyage into the depths of the ice continent of Antarctica.
The book vividly and fascinatingly tells about the wonderful Soviet people who overcame the harsh living conditions at the North and South Poles. Many of these materials have been published in part or in whole in our periodicals. For the first time, they are collected in a book designed for a wide range of readers.
