Nach Pleeth (vgl. ID 13/94), dessen Cello-Buch eher pädagogisch ausgerichtet ist, liegt hier nun eine umfassende Monographie über das Instrument vor, verfaßt von 2 ausgewiesenen Kennern, beide Cellisten und Hochschulprofessoren. Hier wird alles zusammengetragen über instrumentenbauliche und spieltechnische Merkmale, über den Aufstieg des Cellos zum Soloinstrument, über das Repertoire, über die Bedeutung im Ensemble sowie seine Stellung im nichtklassischen Bereich (Exkurs über Jazz). Besondere Gewichtung erfährt das Cello-Repertoire im 20. Jahrhundert - sonst eher vernachlässigt - mit einer Auflistung von fast 1000 Cellokompositionen. Zahlreiche Fotos und Illustrationen verdeutlichen z.B. spieltechnische Aspekte; auch Musik-Ikonographen kommen auf ihre Kosten. Ein interessanter Exkurs befaßt sich mit der Akzeptanz von Frauen als Berufscellistinnen in der 1. Hälfte dieses Jahrhunderts. Das Buch ersetzt keine Celloschule, erläutert und demonstriert aber die wichtigsten Kriterien. Ein Gewinn für alle CellistInnen und sehr gut einsetzbar, wo Ausbildungseinrichtungen am Ort sind.
