Content: Some six years ago the 500th anniversary of the birth of the Spanish-Dutch humanist Juan Luis Vives celebrated in Spain and especially in his hometown Valencia. On a much smaller scale Leuven also contributed to the celebration of this humanist, who outdid even the great Erasmus in originality of ideas in the field of pedagogy, psychology and sociology. At that time already it was obvious to me that the most important humanist of our own region, Justis Lipsius from Overijse, deserved to be honoured in a more conspicuous way than previously. In happy collaboration with Lipsius's hometown of Overijse and with the Plantin-Moretus Museum at Antwerp, a most varied and attractive programme was designed, including several exhibitions, a historical evocation of the man and his world, and a few publications

Content: Petrarch, the "father of Humanism", has exerted a striking impact on early modern intellectuals. This volume discusses how Petrarch's writings were understood, read and used by intellectuals, writers and artists from the fourteenth to the seventeenth century. Specialists from various disciplines (Italian, French, Neo-Latin, Dutch, art history, history of science) demonstrate that early modern reception is an extremely variable phenomenon; that it is largely dominated by the various discourses, paradigm's, literary genres, interests, needs and experiences of the users, and to a much lesser degree by the author's text, even if safeguarded with such great care and by such a famous author as in Petrarch's case. The volume is important for all scholars interested in literature, Humanism, Renaissance Studies, Petrarch, reception, history of reading and the intellectual history of the early modern period. Contributors include: Jean Balsamo, Dóra Bobory, Dina De Rentiis, Ugo Dotti, Karl A.E. Enenkel, Reindert L. Falkenburg, Ursula Kocher, Marc Laureys, Reinier Leushuis, Jan Papy, Paul J. Smith, and Bart Van den Bossche.

Content: In 17th-century intellectual life, the ideas of the Renaissance humanist Justus Lipsius (1547-1606) were omnipresent. The publication of his 'Politica' in 1589 had made Lipsius?s name as an original and controversial political thinker. The sequel, the 'Monita et exempla politica' ('Admonitions'), published in 1605, was meant as an illustration of Lipsius?s political thought as expounded in the 'Politica'. Its aim was to offer concrete models of behavior for rulers against the background of Habsburg politics.0Lipsius?s later political treatise also forms an indispensable key to interpret the place and function of the 'Politica' in Lipsius?s political discourse and in early modern political thought. The 'Admonitions' ? widely read, edited and translated in the 17th and 18th centuries ? show Lipsius?s pivotal role in the genesis of modern political philosophy.

Content: This volume deals with the question of the continuity of Latin literature throughout its history. For the first time, contributions are brought together from each of the three fields within the studies of Latin literature: Classical, Medieval and Neo-Latin, reflecting on problems such as the transmission of the Latin heritage, the creation and perpetuation of a classical normativeness and the reactions against it. The book is divided into three parts, corresponding to the theoretical principle of organic development: “Beginnings?”, “Perfections?”, “Transitions?”, thus questioning the validity of a similar evolutionistic model. Because of the numerous points of contact between Latin and the national literatures, the volume is of particular relevance for the studies of the European literary history. Contributors include: Davide Canfora, Perrine Galand-Hallyn, Sander Goldberg, Thomas Haye, Marc van der Poel, Michael Roberts, Francesco Stella, Wim Verbaal, Gregor Vogt-Spira, and Jan Ziolkowski

Content: No cultural phenomenon can remain vital and evolve without a continuous integration of external elements. Instead of reading the process of appropriation in terms of ‘sources’ or ‘models’, the dynamics involved are better understood using more flexible categories such as creative reception, polyphony and dialogue. In every phase of its evolution, in Antiquity, the Middle Ages or (Early) Modern times, Latin literature had to face a double challenge, one from the past, and one from the present: although the models and heritage of the past always remained normative, contemporary demands had to be met too. The contributions in this volume analyze different moments of intercultural negotiation within the long history of Latin Literature
