Content: This collection about the Vietnamese consists of 84 documents, 33 in English and 51 translations from the French, that cover all three main areas culturally recognized by the Vietnamese as the Northern (Bac Bo), Central (Trung Bo), and Southern (Nam Bo) regions, with Hanoi, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), serving as the main cities of each of the three regions. The cultural data are diverse, but generally the best overall coverage of Vietnamese ethnography will be found in Gourou, Huard, Cima, and supplemented with brief summaries in Landes and in Luro. Other major ethnographic topics discussed include community studies, gender studies with the emphasis on women's roles and status in Vietnamese society, law and legal norms, economics, and features of Vietnamese religion. Information on the French colonial period in Vietnam is given specific attention in Thompson, Bonhomme, Dumarest, and Rouilly. Medicine and medical care are topics discussed in: Jeanselme, Gammeltoft, and Ladinsky. Discussions on social change are given special attention by Dang, Hickey, Kleinen, Luong, and Kerkvliet. Data on politics and political development are found in Hammer, Michaud, and Cima

Content: Qui, aujourd’hui, connaît encore Balthasar Baro ? Il y a un peu plus d’un siècle pourtant, Edmond Rostand devait juger son nom et son œuvre suffisamment évocateurs puisqu’il imaginait pour cadre de la première scène de son Cyrano de Bergerac une représentation de son unique pastorale, la Clorise, à l’Hôtel de Bourgogne. Les contemporains de Baro louaient d’abord en lui l’auteur de la suite et conclusion du plus célèbre roman de la première moitié du xviie siècle, L’Astrée d’Honoré d’Urfé, dont il fut le secrétaire ; ils le reconnaissaient également pour un dramaturge talentueux, à défaut d’être majeur. Baro, en effet, introduisit en France le procédé du théâtre dans le théâtre avec sa Célinde, participa activement, dans les années 1640, à l’essor d’un théâtre sacré, et laissa une œuvre dramatique composite et passionnante, délibérément à l’écart des pratiques et des genres dominants. Il fut en outre l’un des membres de la jeune Académie française et participa, comme tel, à la Querelle du Cid. C’est à cette carrière et à cette œuvre méconnues que le présent ouvrage, le premier qui ait jamais été consacré à Baro, voudrait rendre hommage, en éclairant certains aspects d’une trajectoire d’homme de lettres qui commence à Toulouse et semble s’achever à Montpellier, qui fait passer son auteur du roman au théâtre, ménageant entre l’un et l’autre de multiples transitions

Content: La contribution de ce volume consiste à s’adresser aux questions que provoque l’émergence du théâtre européen, mais surtout le théâtre français, dans le contexte d’un urbanisme grandissant. Dès le XVIe siècle, la ville et ses habitants sont témoins d’une évolution de plus en plus importante concernant l’architecture et la vie humaine. C’est en grande partie à travers le genre comique que ce livre explore ces transformations, selon les perspectives diversifiées que la ville produit à une époque de mutations sociales et d’expansion démographique rapide. L’identité de la ville en scène se construit tantôt par les possibilités de mouvement pour les citadins en allant d’un quartier à l’autre, tantôt par le passage de la ville à la campagne, tantôt par les possibilités de se rencontrer offertes par les foules et par les occasions sociales. Alors, la sociabilité comme elle est représentée sur la scène suscite non seulement le besoin de créer et de mettre en œuvre de nouvelles formes d’interaction humaine, mais aussi amène à réfléchir, implicitement ou explicitement, sur les valeurs qui s’y associent. Enfin, l’aspect imposant de la nouvelle ville invite à mettre en scène de manière imaginative cet environnement urbain.
