Series Statement: Routledge studies on China in transition 57
Content: "This book explores non-electoral means of public participation in contemporary China, both as an outcome of and a key contributor to the party-state's efforts to improve its governing capacity. Examining consultative meetings, public hearings and the use of surveys and questionnaires in Zhejiang province, on an empirical level, the study evaluates the historical development, and institutional backgrounds of these mechanisms, as well as provides a critical assessment of their achievements and failures. At the same time, on a theoretical level, this book contributes to the broader scholarship on contemporary Chinese politics and political development within one-party regimes, as well as debates about state building and democratization. Relying on the distinction between access to and exercise of power, it concludes that non-electoral public participation is in fact a function of state building. Developing a state capable of producing effective solutions to governing challenges, it is argued, requires public participation in the governing process. With analysis informed by interviews with local-level policy-makers and officials, academics and citizens' representatives and activists, Public Participation and State Building in China will be a valuable research resource for students and scholars of Chinese politics, political science and civil society"--

Series Statement: Routledge studies on China in transition 58
Content: "As China enters its proclaimed 'New Era' under President Xi Jinping, this book examines changes and continuity in social relations and political development, investigating what is genuinely new against the backdrop of continuations of previous trends and policies. Presented as a volume of methodologically diverse studies exploring some of the key social and political trends in contemporary China, its authors examine the structural factors that continue to exert influence on developments in China - in the 'New Era', as before - at the deeper and subtler levels. What has remained outside many scholarly discussions is a larger backdrop of continuity, into which the policies of Xi Jinping's administration are inserted to further shape social, economic and political trajectories in contemporary China. This is the first publication of its kind to focus on how continuity and change interplay under Xi; it enables readers to differentiate not only what is genuinely new from continuations of previous trends and policies, but to estimate future trends in the proclaimed 'New Era' and beyond. Social Relations and Political Development in China will be of significant interest to students and scholars of Chinese studies, political science and sociology"--

Content: "Much is written about China and the role of the Chinese Communist Party, but without exploring in detail the nature of the party and how it operates. This book provides an in-depth assessment of the current state of the Chinese Communist Party. It outlines the huge size of the party - 88 million members with 4.3 million organizations at the grassroots level. It sets out how the party has developed over time, how the party is organized and how its ideology is formed and transmitted. It discusses how the party acts in the different areas of China's economy, society and government, at local, regional and national levels. It explores the party's role in the formation of policy, including foreign policy, and assesses the impact of different factions and of the current anti-corruption campaign. Overall, the book demonstrates how embedded the Communist Party is in all aspects of Chinese economy, society and politics, and how its position continues to be consolidated"--
