Am 5. März 1866 strandete die Bremer Bark Libelle, die sich auf der Reise von San Franzisko nach Hongkong befand, auf Wake Island, einem unbewohnten Atoll im Zentralpazifik. Besatzung und Passagiere konnten sich zwar an Land retten, mussten sich aber, da es auf der Insel kein Trinkwasser gab, in zwei kleinen Booten auf die Weiterreise begeben. Nur eines der Boote erreichte nach 14tägiger Fahrt die Marianeninseln, das zweite blieb verschollen. Unter den Mitreisenden waren bekannte Personen der Zeitgeschichte wie die englische Sängerin Anna Bishop - Grundlage für dieses Buch bilden die Aufzeichnungen des Steuermanns Rudolf Kausch, die 150 Jahre später von seinem Urenkel wiederentdeckt wurden.
