Die ähnlichkeitstheoretischen Methoden sind längst zu einem wichtigen Instrument der ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Forschung geworden. Das vorliegende Buch, das aus den Seminarkursen hervorgegangen ist, die vom Verfasser 1966 bis 1969 in den Farbenfabriken Bayer in Leverkusen durchgeführt wurden, hat zum Ziel, dem ingenieurwissenschaflich tätigen Forscher und dem Studierenden einen vertieften Einblick in die Methoden der Ähnlichkeitstheorie zu vermitteln. Da man diese Methode nur dann sicher und sachkritisch auf Forschungsprobleme anwenden kann, wenn über ihre Grundlagen und ihre Tragweite Klarheit besteht, werden im 1. Kapitel die erkenntnistheoretische Basis und die logische Struktur der Dimensionstheorie ausführlich und didaktisch neu durchgeformt behandelt: Den Ausgangspunkt bildet die Darstellung von physikalischen und technischen Sachverhalten als mengentheoretische Relationen zwischen physikalischen Größen, aus der heraus u. a. die Fragen der grundsätzlichen mathematischen Formulierbarkeit der physikalisch-technischen Zusammenhänge, der Invarianz und der dimensionslosen Darstellbarkeit von physikalischen Beziehungen sowie die formal-logische Natur des Dimensionsbegriffes zwanglos und folgerichtig diskutiert werden. Die methodologischen Fragen der Anwendung der Ähnlichkeitstheorie werden im 2. Kapitel ausführlich diskutiert. Man ist beim Erforschen von komplexen physikalisch-technischen Sachverhalten, für die eine theoretisch fundierte mathematische Formulierung des Problems nicht vorliegt, häufig auf die Dimensionsanalyse der problemrelevanten Größen und die Aufstellung eines vollständigen Satzes voneinander linearunabhäangiger dimensionsloser Größen (pi-GroGen) angewiesen
