Este volumen se propone avanzar en el conocimiento de la actividad traductora desarrollada por escritores españoles del siglo XIX. Se insiste en los motivos que los indujeron a realizar tal actividad: como herramienta de aprendizaje literario o como resultado de su interés en la introducción o adaptación de una nueva corriente literaria. También se analizan las traducciones por ellos realizadas. El objeto es comprobar hasta qué punto estas traducciones determinaron su propia producción posterior o si, por el contrario, fue su propia poética personal la que influyó de forma decisiva en el modo de traducir
