Uniform Title:
The making of images in contemporary theatre.
Content:

How can theatre produce images, whereas its type of presence consists in bodies, space and objects ? Our research tries to question a certain type of images made in contemporary theatre. We are trying to define them and to depict the concrete modalities of their making. We are then less talking about images linked to the process of perception than about poetic images, that are particular because they have to be thought of as linked to amaterial fact : the stage. We are basing our demonstration on two points : on Octave Mannoni on one hand and his idea that images can appear as a negative form of what is objectivly shown ; on Freud on the other hand and his use of the concept of negation. Both of them are helping us to define which concrete operations happen during theatre shows. Thanks to psychoanalysis, we are led to consider a scene that differs from the actual stage and from the psyche of the spectator. Most of our work consists in identifying the different operations of negation that can create images on stage ; on that purpose, we base our analysis on a various number of recent theatre shows, in which we try to see how the images are articulated to different levels of creation (text, body, space, play, time, signs). At last, we settle our reflection in the history of theatrical theory and we consider the destiny of the notion of image in that way. It then appears that the promotion of this kind of images in contemporary theatre (with their status balancing between the empirical stage and the spectator) is related to the deconstruction of the exemplay notion of illusion
