Sa mort précoce l'empêcha de participer à l'épanouissement de l'impressionnisme aux côtes de ses amis Monet ou Renoir. Cent cinquante ans plus tard, on commence à mesurer le rôle décisif qu'il joua dans l'émergence de l'impressionnisme.
