Über viele Jahre war einer der langwierigsten und blutigsten Aufstände in der Geschichte Osteuropas ein weißer Fleck in der historischen Forschung: der Untergrundkampf der Organisation Ukrainischer Nationalisten (OUN) und der Ukrainischen Aufständischen Armee (UPA) zur Errichtung eines unabhängigen ukrainischen Staates. Er fand bis in die 1950er Jahre hinein nicht nur in der UdSSR, sondern unter anderem auch auf polnischem Gebiet statt. Petrenko nimmt die Bedeutung von Frauen im ukrainischen nationalistischen Untergrund in den Blick. Rollenklischees gleicht sie mit tatsächlichen Befunden ab. Themen, die in der ukrainischen Geschichtsschreibung bislang kaum thematisiert wurden, ergeben ein neues Bild vom nationalistischen Untergrundkampf: Die Autorin berichtet über Agententätigkeiten von Frauen, Sexualität als Machtinstrument, Gewalterfahrung und -ausübung.
