Die Wechselwirkungen und der Konflikt zwischen Umweltschutz, internationaler Handelspolitik und Handelsliberalisierung werden seit Beginn der 90er Jahre intensiv in Fachkreisen diskutiert. Seit den gewalttätigen Protesten während der Ministerkonferenz in Seattle 1999, die sich gerade aus Furcht vor einem Abbau nationaler Umweltschutzstandards gegen eine weitere Liberalisierung des internationalen Handels richteten, ist die Welthandelsorganisation (WTO) einer breiten Öffentlichkeit ein Begriff. Das Buch analysiert den Konflikt zwischen dem Welthandelsystem, der WTO und umweltpolitischen Initiativen auf drei unterschiedlichen Ebenen: der konzeptionellen, der zwischenstaatlichen und der organisatorischen Ebene.
