Warum sollte es im Surrealismus anders sein als bei anderen Kunstrichtungen? Historisch aufgearbeitet und bewertet wird meist das Oeuvre von männlichen Künstlern. Frauen sind jeweils nur Randgestalten - gerne als Muse oder Mäzenin. Das üppige Katalogbuch der Schirn Kunsthalle rückt hier für den Surrealismus historisch einiges zurecht: Der Einfluss weiblicher Künstler war quantitativ so hoch wie qualitativ relevant. Und das in den unterschiedlichsten Genres: Fotografie, Malerei, Collage, Zeichnung, Bildhauerei. Der Band stellt einzelne Künstlerinnen ausführlich mit Text und Bild vor. Von den Bekannteren wie Oppenheim und Kahlo bis hin zu weniger Bekannten wie Toyen oder Zürn. Hier gibt es also Neues zu entdecken und Vertrautes wird durch fundierte Texte z.T neu eingeordnet und kommentiert. Angehängte Kurzbiographien und eine Auswahlbibliographie machen das Buch zum Nachschlagewerk. Die üppigen Abbildungen und der gute Druck in Verbindung mit entsprechenden Texten sind aber dafür verantwortlich, das es vor allem Lesevergnügen garantiert. Trotz des Preises gern empfohlen.
