In einem stillen Dorf in Belgien steht das Schlößchen der Baronin Annetta von Groningen, und nur einer weiß darum, daß sie eine Schäfer von Fallersleben ist und ihrer Verwandten in Deutschland mit herzlichen Gefühlen der Zugehörigkeit gedenkt. Dieser eine ist ihr "Onkel Bruno", der mit der "Tante Groningen" lange Jahre hindurch in Gedankenaustausch bleibt. Als die Baronin stirbt, ergeben sich nach zwei Seiten hin schwierige Erbschaftsrechte, und Annelies Schäfer, ein frisches Großstadtmädel, wird von der Familie abgeordert, diese Rechte zu vertreten. Was sind Hoffnungen, was sind Pläne? Die Baronin hat über ihr Vermögen in einem unanfechtbaren letzten Willen verfügt, und "Tante Kopflos" erlebt eine kleine Enttäuschung. Annelies aber, im fremden Lande und mitten im Trubel des Krieges ganz auf sich allein gestellt, führt ihre Aufgabe durch und erbt dabei das Glück ihres Lebens. Eine heitere Geschichte, die das Recht der Familie und die Kraft der Blutsverbundenheit mit eindringlichem Stift zeichnet.
