Prof. Hanns Anselm Perten war in der DDR eine der bedeutendsten, aber auch umstrittensten Theaterpersönlichkeiten. Der Spielplan des Rostocker Volkstheaters ist einer der abwechslungsreichsten aller Bühnen in der DDR gewesen. Rostocks Bühne wurde zu dem Reisetheater außerhalb der DDR. Und in Rostock wurden Stücke aufgeführt, die in der DDR als unspielbar galten oder verboten waren. Perten ging mit seinem Engagement ein hohes Risiko ein: So umgab er sich gern mit Parteigrößen und wurde auch bald nach 1945 in die Strukturen der SED eingebunden. Zum Ende seines Lebens brach er mit „seiner“ Partei – die ihn immer kritisch gesehen und ihm oft große Probleme bereitet hatte. Mythen und Legenden ranken sich um die genauen Todesumstände dieser schillernden Künstlerpersönlichkeit. Diese Biografie beschreibt das Leben eines Theatermannes in der DDR über nahezu die gesamte Zeit des Bestehens dieses Staates.
