n "Hsimeng rensheng" spiegelt Hou Hsiao-hsien ein ganzes Jahrhundert am Leben des berühmten taiwanesischen Puppenspielers Li Tien Lu. Geboren am Vorabend des Ersten Weltkriegs, durchlebte dieser die japanische Besetzung und die US-Bombardierung des Landes. Mit 84 Jahren fasst Li Tien Lu die Ereignisse dieser Zeitspanne zusammen und denkt über die Mächte nach, die sein bewegtes Leben geformt haben. Mit einer Stilsicherheit, die ihresgleichen sucht, blendet Hou aus den Erzählungen des alten Mannes zurück. Als Puppenspieler reiste er durchs Land, führte seine Stücke auf, in denen sich, sei̷s inhaltlich, sei̷s formal, sei̷s in den Puppenfiguren selbst, das aktuelle Geschehen widerspiegelt. Er ist ein Meister der Fixeinstellungen, in der Konsequenz ihrer Handhabung mit dem Japaner Yasujiro Ozu vergleichbar. Mit ruhender Kamera hält er einen Ausschnitt fest, in dem das Leben sich bewegt oder ruht. Packend, wie über die teils aus dem Off erklingende Stimme des Meisters die Bilder sich erst allmählich mit Sinn füllen, sich die Klarheit des Inhalts offenbart. So klingen die Ereignisse eher an, als dass sie nachgespielt wirken. Der Film macht deutlich, dass sich das Verhalten des Einzelnen erst im Gesamtzusammenhang richtig verstehen lässt. (Trigon Film)
