Als der Nationalökonom Karl Bücher 1896 die Konjunktion aus Arbeit und Rhythmus prominent machte, barg sie für ihn zunächst eine Antwort auf Entfremdungserfahrungen durch die industrielle Moderne. Seitdem wird der Rhythmus in zahlreichen Diskursen - bis in aktuelle Debatten hinein - mobilisiert, um auf Herausforderungen der Arbeitswelt zu reagieren. Der Band untersucht aus interdisziplinärer Perspektive die Vorstellung einer nicht-entfremdeten Arbeitsweise, die auf einen als ursprünglich und natürlich verstandenen Rhythmus des Menschen zurückgreift. Er versammelt unter anderem geschichtswissenschaftliche, kulturwissenschaftliche und philosophische Beiträge, die den Rhythmus in unterschiedlichen Kontexten in den Blick nehmen, etwa in Kunst, Psychiatriepraxis und Arbeitswissenschaft.
