Niko Pirosmani ist Entdeckung und Legende zugleich. Vielen (noch) unbekannt, wird er in seiner Heimat Georgien als Nationalkünstler verehrt. Pirosmanis um 1900 in Tbilissi entstandene Porträts und Tierbilder sind von eigentümlicher Ausdruckskraft und großer Empfindsamkeit. Seine Landschaften und Alltagsszenen greifen Elemente mittelalterlicher Ikonografie auf und zeugen von einer tiefen Verbundenheit zu seinen Landsleuten. Zugleich erkannte die Avantgarde in Pirosmanis Werk eine neue, radikale und unbekannte Form von Malerei. Wie Henri Rousseau oder Marc Chagall gehört der Autodidakt zu den außergewöhnlichen, schwer einzuordnenden Künstler*innen der frühen Moderne. Dieser Katalog zeigt Pirosmanis Können in zahlreichen Abbildungen: Wie er mit präzisem, skizzenhaftem Pinselstrich auf schwarzem Wachstuch die sparsam aufgetragenen Farben wie aus dunkler Tiefe glühen lässt. Pirosmani war ein Meister der Konzentration – und ein Geschichtenerzähler. Wie im Katalog von georgischen Kunsthistoriker*innen kenntnisreich dargelegt, war er ein singulärer Künstler, eine widersprüchliche Figur und ein wichtiger Teil der Kunstszene in Tbilissi, das damals als das »Paris des Ostens« galt
