Die Wende der didaktischen Forschung vom Lehrer zum Lerner und die offene Diskussion um die Realisierung des lebenlangen Lernens richten zwangsläufig das Interesse auf die Fernschulpädagogik, denn das von ihr intendierte "Fernlernen" in Form eines autonomen, selbstbestimmten Lernens drängt sich gegenwärtig als eine bewährte und praktikable Lösungsmöglichkeit vieler anstehender Ausbildungsaufgaben geradezu auf. Es scheint auch so, als ob Bildungspolitiker die Leistungen und die Leistungsfähigkeit des Fernschulwesens im öffentlichen Interesse zunehmend erkennen, was sich beispielhaft in den Referaten der Minister Schmude (Bund) und Jochem (Saarland/KMK) auf dem Forum Fernunterricht 1978 in Bad Godesberg zeigte. Als Mitglieder des AKF Arbeitskreis Korrekter Fernunterricht Deutscher Fernschulverband e. V. , Bonn, Roland Christiani, Konstanz, Erich Meyer, Düsseldorf, Jochen Krause, Hamburg und Bernhard von Minckwitz, München, nach einer Diskussion auf diesem Forum anregten, aktuelle Probleme des Fernunterrichts und insbesondere des sogenannten autonomen Fernunterrichts zusammenzustellen, wurde diese Idee gerne aufgegriffen, zumal die Erziehungswissenschaft und speziell auch die Erwachsenenpädagogik das gesellschaftlich so wichtige Forschungsfeld in nicht zu vertretender Weise noch weitgehend ignorieren. Im Laufe der Arbeit wurde immer deutlicher, wie offen heute Fernschulpädagogik in Anbetracht der Forschungslage zu verstehen ist und daß zunächst Fragen gestellt und Perspektiven aufgezeigt werden müssen, ehe abgesicherte Antworten gegeben werden können. In Anbetracht dieser Problemlage erwies es sich als sachdienlich, mehrere Autoren mit unterschiedlichen Auffassungen, Ansätzen und Intentionen zu bitten, aus ihrer Sicht Fragen, Aussagen oder Forderungen zum Komplex Fernunterricht zu entwickeln
