Flucht ist im 21. Jahrhundert zur Realität für mehr als 60 Millionen Menschen weltweit geworden. Hunderttausende suchten im Sommer 2015 in der europäischen Union Zuflucht. Weniger als 12 Monate liegen zwischen dem bundesrepublikanischen Optimismus eines »Wir schaffen das« und der Einschätzung, die Migration aus Kriegs- und Krisengebieten sei ein Angriff auf die europäischen Außengrenzen. Bis heute gibt es keine konsensfähige europäische Asylpolitik. Im Gegenteil, der Konflikt zwischen Russland und der Ukraine, die anhaltende Euro-Schulden-Krise, das Austrittsbegehren Großbritanniens aus der Europäischen Union, die Krise in der Türkei, die Bedrohung durch den »Islamischen Staat« in Syrien und dem Irak sowie die Terroranschläge in europäischen Metropolen stellen Europa vor eine Zerreißprobe mit unklarem Ausgang. In diesem Zusammenhang stellt sich die Frage nach der Reaktion europäischer Staaten auf das als dominant empfundene Auftreten Deutschlands in der Debatte um die Europa- und die Flüchtlingspolitik. Die Diskussion über eine zukunftsfähige Politik wird vielfach mit Rekurs auf die Geschichte geführt. Im Blickpunkt der Podiumsdiskussion steht die Bedeutung der Vergangenheit für die gegenwärtige Politik der europäischen Staaten angesichts der aktuellen Probleme, einschließlich der Flucht- und Migrationsbewegungen in die EU. Mit internationalen Gästen diskutiert das Jüdische Museum Berlin folgende Fragen: Wie wurde im letzten Jahr und wie wird heute die so genannte Flüchtlingskrise in Deutschland, Polen, Frankreich und Großbritannien diskutiert und welche historischen Bezüge werden hergestellt? Welche Erinnerungen in Bezug auf Flucht und Vertreibung sind lebendig, gibt es neuerliche Befürchtungen über einen europäischen Führungsanspruch Deutschlands?
