Helga Kinsky-Pollak, geboren 1930 in Wien, wurde im Januar 1943 aus der tschechischen Stadt Kyjov/Gaya, wo sie inzwischen bei Verwandten lebte, zusammen mit ihrem Vater Otto Pollak (1864-1978) nach Theresienstadt deportiert. Beide begannen damals mit ihren Aufzeichnungen. Helga lebte im Mädchenheim L 410 im Zimmer 28 (vgl. H. Brenner-Wonschick: "Die Mädchen von Zimmer 28", BA 7/04). Im Oktober 1944 wurde sie nach Auschwitz deportiert, anschließend in ein Außenlager des KZ Flossenbürg und schließlich nach Theresienstadt, wo sie ihren Vater wieder traf. Im Buch sind 2 ihrer Tagebücher (der 3. Band ging verloren) in chronologischer Reihenfolge abgedruckt, ergänzt durch Kalendernotizen ihres Vaters, Briefe, einer Beschreibung ihrer Kindheit, Gespräche mit der Herausgeberin, zahlreiche Fotos, Zeichnungen, Abbildungen von Tagebuchseiten. Ein beeindruckendes Dokument einer Heranwachsenden, das, eingebettet in den historischen Kontext, einen guten Einblick gibt in die Gefühlswelt eines jüdischen Mädchens angesichts der es umgebenden Bedrohung.
