Content: Rulers' courts of the pre-modern Middle East have long been a staple of Western fantasies about the East. Yet in spite of the importance of the court as a symbol of the absolutist power of the 'Orient', relatively few scholars have explored the cultural production of the courts of the pre-modern Middle East. 'In the Presence of Power', edited by Maurice Pomerantz and Evelyn Vitz, offers 12 chapters that present a complex and nuanced image of rulers' courts as vital spaces of performance. Building on previous studies that have examined the court as an important sociopolitical space but moving in new directions, this volume explores literary works produced about and for performance in courts from the 8th to the 16th century. Contributions address topics such as delight, persuasion, and entertainment in Byzantine and Abbasid rulers' courts.

Content: In Licit Magic: The Life and Letters of al-Ṣāḥib born ʿAbbād (d. 385/995) Maurice A. Pomerantz explores the biography and literary output of a major tenth-century Muslim statesman, literary patron, and intellectual. His nearly two-decade reign as vizier on behalf of two Buyid amirs was an important period for the flowering of Arabic letters, Muʿtazilī theology and Shīʿism in Western Iran. Making use of Ibn ʿAbbād’s large corpus of letters ( rasāʾil ), Pomerantz explores the role that eloquence played in the conduct of administration, the maintenance of social networks of elites, and persuasion. Licit Magic argues that the eloquent expression that Ibn ʿAbbād displayed in his letters was central to his exercise of power

Series Statement: Ismaili texts and translations
Content: "The 'Uyun al-akhbar is the most complete text written by an Ismaili author on the history of the Ismaili community from its origins up to his own time in the 15th century. The seventh volume, edited here for the first time, together with a summary English translation, deals in particular with the period of the three Fatimid caliphs, al-Mustansir, al-Musta'li and al Amir, and then the Tayyibi Ismaili community in the Yemen. The author of this 15th century text, Idris 'Imad al-Din, who was himelf a leader of the Tayyibis, took a special interest in the commencement of the Ismaili movement in the Yemen under the Sulayhids, in the schism that split the Ismailis into two rival communities following the death of al-Mustansir in 1094, and the final rupture with Egypt after the murder of al-Amir in 1130. He also devotes a substantial portion of this volume to the history of the later Ismailis in the Yemen and the pivotal role of al-Sayyida al-Hurra, the famous Sulayhid 'queen', in establishing the Tayyibi Ismaili community of the Yemen independently of the Fatimid establishment in Egypt."--Publisher description
