Para la operacionalizacion del concepto de conocimiento de anticonceptivos los cuestionarios tipo CAP contienen consultas que permiten a las entrevistadas mencionar (preguntas abiertas) y reconocer (preguntas cerradas) metodos especificos. Aunque pudiera esperarse que las consultas abiertas proporcionan indices relativamente completos, se ha detectado que un indice combinado entrega datos mas refinados. La validacion de las medidas se basa en variables externas (educacion, uso de anticonceptivos, evaluacion que la entrevistadora hace de la comprension de la entrevistada sobre planificacion familiar) que muestran una mayor congruencia para los valores del indice combinado que para otras medidas alternativas. Asi, se determina que el metodo mas conocido es la pildora y que, de los paises estudiados en el PECFAL-Rural, los que exhiben un nivel mas elevado de conocimientos son Costa Rica y Colombia. Al mismo tiempo, se constata que la informacion de las encuestas solo cubre algunas dimensiones del conocimiento de metodos.
