Scott teil, der sich mit dem Norweger Amundsen ein Wettrennen zum Südpol lieferte, dort Wochen nach seinem Kontrahenten eintraf und auf dem Rückweg mit seinen vier Begleitern umkam. 1924 montierte Ponting seine dokumentarischen Ausnahmen zu einem Stummfilm, der zum Jubiläum 2011 vom British Film Institute restauriert und mit einer Musik von Simon Fisher Turner neuaufgeführt wurde.
