Technische Pannen sind unvermeidbar, ihre Ursachen und Folgen oftmals unklar und umstritten. Die betroffenen Organisationen reagieren darauf mit zwei Strategien, die in einem komplizierten Verhältnis zueinander stehen: Ursachenforschung und Schuldzuweisung. Diese Problematik des Umgangs mit Pannen wird anhand von ethnografischen Studien zur Krise der Gepäckabfertigung an den Flughäfen Paris Roissy und London Heathrow analysiert. Es stellt sich heraus, dass die beiden Strategien unvereinbar sind und dennoch auf immer virtuosere Weise kombiniert werden. Dieser Befund stellt die These vom Aufstieg der Netzwerkgesellschaft in Frage.
