Au cours de l'histoire, différents domaines de la connaissance se sont intéressés au phénomène mystérieux du rêve tentant de pénétrer ses secrets, de découvrir son sens caché ou sa fonction. Dès l'Antiquité, Egyptiens, Grecs et Orientaux, lui ont attaché une grande importance et interprétaient les songes qu'ils comparaient aux grands mythes collectifs et analysaient comme un avertissement du ciel, des présages ou des visions prémonitoires. À la fin du XIXe siècle, nombre d'artistes ont représenté le rêve comme la révélation d'un autre univers qui transfigurait la réalité objective ; tenter de peindre l'onirique était, pour eux, une manière de transgresser les frontières de l'art, d'élargir son domaine et d'affirmer ses nouveaux pouvoirs
