Dieses Buch wurde für Leserinnen und Leser geschrieben, die die Gebiete, Methoden und Ergebnisse der Weltraumforschung kennenlernen möchten, sei es, daß sie während ihres Studiums oder im Verlauf ihres Berufslebens mit diesem Fach in Berührung kommen oder sei es, daß sie einfach den Drang verspüren, mehr über die Weltraumumgebung der Erde zu erfahren. Entstanden ist es als Niederschrift einer Vorlesung gleichen Themas, die seit geraumer Zeit und in wechselnder Form an der Universität Bonn gehalten wird. Wie diese Vorlesung so wendet sich das vorliegende Buch an ein relativ breites Publikum. Vorausgesetzt werden lediglich Grundkenntnisse der Mathematik und Physik, wie sie in den ersten Semestern eines natur- oder ingenieurwissenschaftlichen Studiums erworben werden. Spezielleres Wissen wird im Zusammenhang mit dem jeweils betrachteten Phänomen abgeleitet. Diese Ableitungen sind möglichst einfach gehalten und orientieren sich an dem Prinzip, daß im Konfliktfall der physikalischen Anschaulichkeit vor der formalen Strenge der Vorzug gegeben wird. Insbesondere war ich bemüht, die berühmt-berüchtigte Phrase 'Wie sich leicht zeigen läßt ... ' so weit wie möglich aus dem Text zu verbannen und alle Ableitungen in leicht nachvollziehbaren Schritten anzubieten, selbst auf die Gefahr hin, den fortgeschrittenen Leser zu unterfordern. Der Verständlichkeit und Anschaulichkeit dienen auch die vielen Abbildungen, die bekanntlich oft mehr sagen als 'tausend Worte'
