1963 erstmals in englischer Sprache erschienen, wurde das Buch schnell eines der bekanntesten Werke über die Zerstörung Dresdens. Der Autor gliedert die Darstellung in fünf Teile: 1) Präzedenzfälle (Rotterdam, London, Coventry, Wuppertal, Hamburg, Kassel, Darmstadt, Braunschweig). 2) Der historische Hintergrund (Bedeutung Dresdens als angeblich militärisches Angriffsziel). 3) Die Durchführung des Angriffs (Doppelschlag in der Nacht durch die Bomber der RAF, Tagangriff der US-Luftstreitkräfte, Loran-Navigation, Zielmarkierung, Angriffsverfahren). 4) Das Nachspiel (Aschenregen, Opfer, Notmaßnahmen, Bergungen der Leichen, Identifizierungen, Verbrennungen auf dem Altmarkt, Bestattungen). 5) Reaktionen (zeitgenössische Bewertungen, innerenglische Kritik an den Flächenbombardements, Sinn des Strategischen Luftkriegs gegen die Zivilbevölkerung). Die Arbeitsweise des Autors traf schnell auf Kritik: weitgehender Verzicht auf Einzelnachweise, Nutzung der oral history ohne zuverlässige Quellenkritik, dramatisierender Erzählstil, vor allem aber die Benutzung von zweifelhaften Daten, wie zB die Angabe von 135000 Opfern (in späteren Auflagen gibt er sogar höhere Zahlen an), während zwischen 30000 und 40000 wirklichkeitsnäher ist.
