Diese Rekurse werden in Gemälden des Heisterbacher Altars, des Kirchenväter-Altars von Michael Pacher, des Nürnberger Augustiner-Altars und des Bartholomäus-Altars näher bestimmt; ausführlich werden ihre Funktionen wie die Vermittlungsleistung, die verschiedenen Ausprägungen ästhetischer Reflexion sowie ein inhärenter Ikonoklasmus erörtert. Im Fokus stehen dabei die damals weit verbreiteten gemalten Skulpturenretabel mit nebeneinander gereihten Heiligen.
