Die Biographie eines unangepassten Soldaten: Vom Kadett im Kaiserreich zum Offizier in der Weimarer Republik, vom General im Nationalsozialismus zum Politikberater und Rüstungslobbyisten in der Bundesrepublik. Gerhard Graf von Schwerin war Freikorpskämpfer und Putschist, diente in der Reichswehr und der Wehrmacht, erhielt höchste Auszeichnungen und brachte es zum General der Panzertruppe. Gleichzeitig geriet er immer wieder mit seinen Vorgesetzten aneinander und hatte Kontakte zu Angehörigen des militärischen Widerstands gegen Hitler. Seine Kooperation mit den Westalliierten während der Kriegsgefangenschaft fiel dabei immer wieder auf ihn zurück. Machte sie ihn zunächst zu einem Vordenker der militärischen Westintegration und zum ersten Sicherheitsberater Konrad Adenauers, wurde sie später zum Stolperstein für Schwerins Ambitionen in der Bundeswehr. Unter Auswertung einer breiten Quellenbasis schildert Peter M. Quadflieg die Karrierepfade dieses ungewöhnlichen Generals, Lobbyisten verschiedener Rüstungsunternehmen, V-Manns der CIA, Vertrauten von Franz Josef Strauß und FDP-Beraters.
