Nicht nur ein begnadeter Sänger, er ist auch ein Unterhaltungskünstler hohen Grades, was die Lektüre des Buches (der Titel ist vielfältig deutbar) äußerst kurzweilig und amüsant macht. Der 1,32 Meter große (Contergan geschädigte) Konzertsänger (1959 geboren), der - mit Grammies und Ehrungen überhäuft - derzeit im Zenith seines Schaffens steht, scheint sich zu "Everybody's Darling" zu entwickeln. Einer, der viel ertragen, einstecken und erleiden musste, versprüht Witz ohne Ende, der manchmal in der Kehle stecken bleibt und gelegentlich in Zynismus mündet. Quasthoff hat sehr dezidierte Meinungen: zur Musik (im Jazz ist er ebenso daheim wie in der Klassik), zur Gesangskunst und Interpretation, zur Politik, zu Kolleg/-innen ... Nebenbei ist das auch eine Milieu- und Sozialstudie der 60er- und 70er-Jahre, die man nicht besser hätte einfangen und wiedergeben können; die Passagen über seine Schulzeit haben "Feuerzangenbowle"-Qualität. Der dramaturgische Aufbau ist nicht durchweg gelungen und etwas holprig, die Diskographie schlampig, das schmälert aber das Lesevergnügen in keiner Weise. Breite Empfehlung.
