Mit dem Beginn der motorisierten Fliegerei an der Schwelle zum 20. Jahrhundert verstärkte sich die Kultur der Technikbegeisterung und es wuchs eine neue Generation abenteuer- und unternehmungslustiger junger Männer heran. Einige von ihnen machten sich als Konstrukteure, Flieger, Unternehmer oder Militärflieger einen Namen. Um sie bildete sich ein medialer Kult heraus, der ihr Leben und ihre Flugleistungen zum Mythos werden ließ. Einer dieser Akteure war Josef Suwelack (1888-1915) aus Billerbeck in Westfalen. Sein Können präsentierte er öffentlich in hoch dotierten Flugwettbewerben. Die zunächst als Sportveranstaltungen ausgetragenen Wettbewerbe weckten schon bald das Interesse des Militärs, das die Fliegerei subventionierte, Entwicklungen beschleunigte und beeinflusste.Bei Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs meldete sich Suwelack freiwillig zur Fliegertruppe. Als ziviler Aufklärungsflieger an der Westfront bei der Feldfliegerabteilung 24 bot sich ihm ein spezifischer Blick auf das Kriegsgeschehen, das er in zahllosen Fotografien und in Feldpostbriefen an seine Familie dokumentierte. Am 13. September 1915 stürzten er und sein Beobachter unter nicht endgültig geklärten Umständen tödlich ab. Durch Nachrufe, regionale Zeitungen, Kurzfilme, Publikationen sowie auf diversen Internetseiten zur Fliegerei und in einer 1988 erschienen Familienbiografie sind im Verlauf von hundert Jahren verschiedene Narrative des kurzen Lebens von Josef Suwelack entstanden. Rebecca Quick stellt die Biografie Suwelacks deshalb in mehrfacher Hinsicht auf den Prüfstand. Sie schildert das Leben Suwelacks vor dem zeitgenössischen Hintergrund des Jahrzehnts vor dem Ersten Weltkrieg, dekonstruiert tradierte Erzählmuster als „gemachte“ Geschichten und diskutiert die Optionen eines kritischen Umgangs mit Fliegerbiografien.
