Von der Firma Chandos in Eigenregie produzierte Madrigalkomödie L'Amfiparnaso von Orazio Vecchi (1550-1605), die 2003 im Rahmen der Dartington Summer School live aufgezeichnet wurde. "Das 1597 entstandene Werk steht noch ganz in der Vokaltradition der Renaissance. Doch indem es die Figuren und Handlungsmuster der Commedia dell'arte in der Art einer Nummerfolge in einen erzählerischen Zusammenhang bringt, nimmt es eine reizvolle Zwitterstellung zwischen konzertantem Madrigal und der im Entstehen begriffenen Oper ein. Der Weg zum Musikdrama Monteverdis ist allerdings noch lang - die Affekte stehen unverbunden nebeneinander, bei den Figuren handelt es sich noch nicht um empfindsame Subjekte, sondern um Rollentypen. Was vor allem damit zusammenhängt, dass sie nicht als Individuen singen und handeln, sondern musikalisch stets nur durch den Ensemblegesang repräsentiert werden. Vecchi sah in seiner Madrigalkomödie ein Spektakel für das Ohr und nicht für das Auge, eine szenische Aufführung zog er nicht in Betracht. Die gestenreiche Musik, der bisweilen derbe Wortwitz und die Handlungsmuster der Commedia dell'arte legen eine szenische Adaption jedoch nahe. Der Regisseur Peter Wilson hat in Dartington einen erfolgreichen Versuch dazu gemacht. Das englische Vokalensemble "I Fagiolini" unter der Leitung von Robert Hollingworth postiert er seitlich auf der Bühne, die Handlung wird durch vier maskierte Pantomimen dargestellt, die in insgesamt dreizehn Rollen schlüpfen. Personenführung und Bühnenbild sind bewusst einfach gehalten und damit der volkstümlichen Vorlage angemessen." (Max Nyffeler, beckmesser.de)
