Join Kirill Petrenko and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra live in the Great Amber Concert Hall in Liepāja, Latvia for a splendid program celebrating Europe and championing the freedom and independence of oppressed groups, featuring the incredible Latvian mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča! The concert begins with Pēteris Vasks’s Musica dolorosa for String Orchestra, a personal lament for his departed sister, as well as a political and collective lament for the Latvian people living under the Soviet regime. The work, according to the composer himself, is his “most tragic opus, the only one in which there is no optimism…” The program continues with Valentin Silvestrov's Elegy, arranged here for string orchestra by Ivan Karabits. Next, internationally-renowned Garanča joins orchestra and conductor on stage for a trio of works beginning with Luciano Berio’s soaring cycle Folk Songs, which spotlight countries like Italy, France, and Armenia. With Leoš Janáček’s orchestral rhapsody Taras Bulba, the ensemble evoke the conflicts between the Cossacks and Poles through turbulent and triumphant music. The concert ends with Sibelius’s symphonic poem Finlandia, a poignant embodiment of the Finnish spirit, written in reaction to the repression of the Finnish press by the Russian regime at the turn of the 20th century. The talents of the world-class orchestra and star soloist offer a moment of heartfelt solidarity, demonstrating the importance of music at watershed moments in history.
