In het korte leven van Modersohn-Becker (1876-1907) spelen het Noord-Duitse Worpswede en Parijs een vitale rol. In de kunstenaarskolonie te Worpswede komt zij in aanraking met het enigszins traditionele impressionisme van kunstenaars als Otto Modersohn (met wie zij trouwt) en Fritz Mackensen. Tijdens haar verschillende reizen naar Parijs leert zij de experimentele kunst van haar tijd kennen: het expressionisme van Vincent van Gogh, de zware lijnen en platte kleurvlakken van Paul Gauguin en van Les Nabis, het meer geconstrueerde werk van Paul Cézanne en de intense beeldhouwkunst van Auguste Rodin. Terwijl zij heen en weer geslingerd wordt tussen het huwelijksleven in het veendorp Worpswede en de internationale kunstwereld van Parijs, ontwikkelt zij een eigen beeldtaal en wordt haar werk vooruitstrevender dan dat van haar collega's in Worpswede.
