"Der Maler El Greco zählt heute zu den bedeutendsten und teuersten Alten Meistern der Kunstgeschichte. 1541 in Griechenland geboren, machte El Greco in Spanien als Hofmaler Philipps II. Karriere. Doch aufgrund seiner eigenwilligen Interpretation religiöser Themen und seines außergewöhnlichen Malstils hatte der Künstler immer wieder Schwierigkeiten mit seinen Auftraggebern und Zeitgenossen. Seine dünnen, in die Länge gezogenen, verzerrten Darstellungen der Menschen, seine ungewöhnlich grelle Farbgebung - heute sein Markenzeichen - sorgten damals für Skandale, ließen ihn in Ungnade fallen. Als der Künstler 1614 starb, geriet er in Vergessenheit, viele seiner Kirchenbilder wurden ins Ausland verkauft, über die ganze Welt verstreut. Erst Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde sein Werk von Kunsthistorikern wiederentdeckt, nahmen Avantgarde-Künstler wie Picasso und die Expressionisten Macke, Marc und Beckmann seine "moderne Auffassung von Malerei" zum Vorbild für ihre Kunst."
