Die Reihe FOKUS DENKMAL präsentiert bedeutende Kunst- und Geschichtsdenkmale nach ihrer Konservierung und Restaurierung und beleuchtet die Themen der Denkmalpflege. - - Die Forschungsergebnisse im Rahmen einer Restaurierung erschließen unbekannte Dimensionen eines Objekts. - - Die Einheit von Erforschung und Erhaltung gehört zum Kern des denkmalpflegerischen Auftrags, denn das Verständnis der Kunst- und Baudenkmale führt zur Wertschätzung, Anerkennung und Teilhabe in der Öffentlichkeit. - - Dies wiederum ist die Grundlage für das gesellschaftliche Einverständnis für die Bewahrung und für das notwendige Engagement bei der Erhaltung des kulturellen Erbes. - - Die Restaurierung der Josephskapelle im Leopoldinischen Trakt der Wiener Hofburg galt einem vergessenen Meisterwerk der Wiener Hofkunst unter Kaiserin Maria Theresia. - - Das groß angelegte Projekt war für das Bundesdenkmalamt der Anlass, sich intensiv mit dem Bauwerk und seiner künstlerischen Ausstattung auseinanderzusetzen. Eingehende restaurierungstechnische Untersuchungen und Befundungen an den Wandmalereien, Gemälden und der preziösen Einrichtung schufen die Grundlage für deren sorgfältige denkmalfachliche Konservierung. Die wissenschaftlichen Ergebnisse der umfangreichen Kampagne werden in dem einen Teil der Aufsätze im vorliegenden Band präsentiert. - - Der andere Teil der Beiträge beschäftigt sich mit kunsthistorischen Fragen, die im engen interdisziplinären Austausch mit den RestauratorInnen und dem Bundesdenkmalamt gestellt wurden. Dabei werden Zuschreibungsfragen an berühmte österreichische Barockmaler thematisiert, das als besonders fortschrittlich erkannte ikonographische Programm analysiert, eine künstlerisch als unbedeutend eingestufte Goldschmiedearbeit in die Sphären eines Meisterwerks aus der legendären Kunstkammer Kaiser Rudolphs IV. katapultiert und schließlich ein verschwenderisch mit Lapislazuli geschmückter Altar samt Tabernakel in die erste Liga neapolitanischer Kunstproduktion des frühen 17. und des 18. Jahrhunderts gerückt. - - Das beeindruckende Ergebnis der Restaurierung und die sensationellen, im internationalen Rang stehenden Erkenntnisse der kunsthistorischen Forschung lassen die Josephskapelle nunmehr in einem gänzlich neuen Licht erscheinen. Dies aber ganz im Sinne der in der Charta von Venedig 1964 eingemahnten Weitergabe unserer Denkmäler "im ganzen Reichtum ihrer Authentizität"
