Die Publikation ist eine Sonderauswertung der umfassenden Erhebung zur "Studiensituation und den studentischen Orientierungen", die seit 1982 in den alten Bundesländern und seit 1992 auch in den neuen Bundesländern durchgeführt wird. Die Studierenden der Rechtswissenschaft sind hochmotiviert und sehr leistungsbereit, im Schnitt ein Jahr jünger als die übrigen Universitäts-Studenten. Der Studiengang selbst ist geprägt von einer Dissonanz zwischen hohen Prüfungsanforderungen und der Qualität der Lehre. Fast 90 Prozent der Studierenden bereiten sich bei privaten Repetitoren außerhalb der Hochschule auf die juristische Staatsprüfung vor. Dieses Alarmsignal darf die Lehre nicht länger übersehen.
