Die Werke von Antonio Vivarini, seinem Schwager Giovanni d‘Alemagna, seinem Bruder Bartolomeo und dem Sohn Alvise widersetzen sich in vielem gängigen Schemata stilistischer, typologischer und technischer Entwicklung. Die Studie fragt nach Rezeptionsprozessen und Innovationen und setzt sich mit bisherigen Beschreibungsmodellen – etwa jenem des toskanischen "Einflusses" – auseinander. Die früheste breit dokumentierte Mitarbeit eines nordalpinen Malers in Italien wird als Kultur- und Techniktransfer diskutiert. Der Ansatz der "Werkstattmonographie" ermöglicht es, über eine Lebensspanne hinaus der Frage nach Kontinuitäten und Traditionen, zumal "Werkstatttraditionen" nachzugehen, von denen oft implizit ausgegangen wird. Sie erweisen sich häufig als Konstrukte, die sich forschungsgeschichtlich auf bestimmte Prämissen zum künstlerischen Schaffen in einer Familienwerkstatt zurückführen lassen.
