Boccaccios Werk ist die erste Biographie des Dichters der Göttlichen Komödie, mehr noch, es ist eine der ersten Biographien in einer noch heute gesprochenen Sprache. Giovanni Boccaccios Trattattello in Laude di Dante, der nun in der Übersetzung von Moritz Rauchhaus neu zugänglich gemacht wird, entstand in den 1350er-Jahren - also gleichzeitig mit Boccaccios berühmtestem Werk, dem Decamerone. Er setzt dem Dichter-Kollegen und seinem Werk ein Denkmal: Dantes Herkunft, Leben und Studium, seine politische Laufbahn und sein langes Exil werden ebenso geschildert wie die Charakterstärken und -schwächen des Dichters, sein Aussehen und seine wichtigsten Werke. Dabei geht es nicht nur um die Erhebung Dantes in den Himmel der italienischen Dichtung, es geht nicht zuletzt um die Installation dieses italienischsprachigen Himmels überhaupt. Dass wir heute Dantes 700. Todestag feiern, liegt auch daran, dass wir ihn seit 670 Jahren durch Boccaccios Biographie besser kennen.
